My Updated Skincare Routine

I went over this on my Instagram stories on Wednesday night and got lots of questions, but I also wanted to link products for you guys so here we are!

I was going to call this my midlife skincare routine, but some of y’all don’t know me personally and don’t get why that’s funny so we’re moving on…

I want to preface this by saying that skincare is complicated. What seems to be working for everyone else may not work for you. Our skin is our largest organ and is super complex. It’s constantly changing and adapting so I am constantly doing the same thing with my skincare.

I have combination skin leaning more oily. I’m currently running dry because of the weird weather we’ve been having here in the DMV, but the current skincare routine I have has been ongoing for about 3/4 months now and it’s been working out great for me through this season.

A good, gentile cleanser

My cleanser has been easy for me. I want something that’s going to keep the biofilm of my skin very healthy, but also get it all cleaned up. I have had the Tula for awhile and it’s been great, but I got the Mario Badescu products for Christmas and I love his cleanser a lot more. I rotate between them mainly because I’m too lazy to move one from the shower to the sink, but they both have been great fo me.

Something to help get the makeup off

When my skin is temperamental aka I’m getting stupid, random breakouts, I always use something to scrub my face. I have a knock off Clairosonic from Conair, but I lost the charger for it (we’ve all been there. Did this with my camera too) so I’ve been using my FOREO Luna FoFo. I also hate whoever named these products, but that’s fine. You do you FOREO. It’s like a little baby rubber scrub brush, but it can also analyze your skin. It’s actually really cool, but it’s expensive. I got mine in a FabFitFun Box, but you can find much cheaper dupes on Amazon without the fancy extras.

A high quality moistorizer

I think your moisturizer can either make or break your skincare routine. Even if you have oily skin, you need to use a moisturizer. I SWEAR BY THIS! I like something very thick to suck in all the moisture during the night and to really coat my skin to protect it while I sleep. If you like a lighter option, go for the Kate Sommerville. This one feels like nothing is there, but still puts in the work while you sleep.

Adding the extra serum boost

Everyone acts like serums are stupid extras that don’t do anything… Let me tell you sugar, your 50 year old skin will thank you for investing in some hyaluronic acid and a good vitamin C serum. Even adding some simple essential oils can really crank up how hard your skincare works. Plus none of these smell bad so at least you have some good scents on your face!

I do go a little easier on my skin in the morning. I usually just wash it after the gym and put a light moisturizer on with SPF in it before I put on my makeup. I think great skin is made at night time and I’ve seen the results over the years. My skin is very important to me and I hope if you struggle with your skin, this can give you the help you need!

Cheers!

My Ride or Die Lush Products

I am a huge fan of Lush products. I’m a big advocate for natural products and I love that they are a cruelty free company! They’re very charitable and support lots of great causes such as helping the environment, ending animal testing, and community enrichment, but that’s not the only reason I love LUSH. LUSH makes some really amazing, quality products that are essential to my everyday routine that I needed to share.

The first product is their Tea Tree Water. This is a toner water that is great for people who have oily skin (like me)! I added a toner to my daily skin routine about a year ago and it’s something I feel necessary now to get my skin REALLY clean when I wash my face. I use my everyday face wash and then spray on the toner afterwards to get out any excess makeup or dirt that was left behind. I also love that this toner has tea tree oil in it, which is an essential oil that I put on my breakouts to help reduce redness and disinfect them.

The next product from LUSH that I use everyday is Ocean Salt and I seriously could not live without this stuff! I’ve used this for over a year now consistently to exfoliate my face and it not only helps my skin, but it just makes my heart happy. I’m so obsessed with sand and the salty air of the beach so rubbing this on my face every night makes me miss the beautiful skin I get in the summer time! It’s made with sea salt, softening avocado, lime, and vodka. You rub it into your skin before using your face wash to clear off dead skin and open up your pores. I use this on my feet too when they need a little TLC, but this is *for sure* a favorite of mine!

The last product that I am ride or die for from LUSH is Roots! I got this product because I was tired of my hair going flat throughout the day when I straightened it and I wanted something to give it more volume naturally without me having to put tons of hairspray in or what have you. Roots is a hair treatment that you rub on your scalp before you get in the shower and it does wonders for my hair! It smells like mint and its so soft when you rub it on your scalp! You just rub it all over the roots of your hair for 5-10 minutes and then you hop in the shower and wash it out and wash your hair like normal! Now, I also have a naturally dry scalp (can I just say how annoying it is that I have oily skin on my face and a dry scalp like seriously how on earth did this happen? Thanks Mom) but I have very thick, heavy hair. Roots not only conditions my scalp, it softens my hair, and makes it feel more lightweight. Now, I can’t say it does wonders on giving my hair more volume, but I love it for so many other reasons. I recommended this to my mom who has very thin, fine hair, but she has yet to try it, but once she does I will definitely let my thin haired gals know if it helps!

All of these products work great for me, but everybody is so so different so they may not work as great for you, but I really do hope you give them a try! I have used many LUSH products and have had success with some and complete fails with others which is totally normal! LUSH is such an amazing company and I really do believe in their products and what they stand for. You know your money is going to a good cause and I highly recommend you check out more of what they do and what they stand for. I will leave links to all the products mentioned down below and make sure to let me know what products you recommend for me from LUSH as well! I always love to try new things and hear other peoples experiences and recommendation! Hope y’all check it out!

Why Makeup Everyday is a No-No

During the week, I wear makeup between 4-6 days a week but I will NEVER wear makeup everyday of the week. Now that doesn’t mean that I go in public with my sleepy eyes all natural for the whole world to see. No one wants to see that (honestly I just feel better with a tiny bit on). On a normal day, I’ll put on a whole face of makeup. That consists of primer, foundation, concealer, setting powder, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, bronzer, blush, and highlighter. On other days, I like to just let my skin breath. I read this quote from Victoria Beckham once where a reporter asked her if she could give advice to 20 year old her, what would she say? The first thing she said was, “Don’t wear so much makeup. Let your skin breath. You’re so young.”

That really stuck with me because I thought, well, I’m 20 and I wear a lot of makeup almost everyday solely because I felt like I had to in order to look good. Now, days where I have to get up really early or I have an exam or I just don’t have lots to do I put on my tinted moisturizer, eyeliner, and mascara… THATS IT!

I can’t advocate and be like, “Omg this has changed my skin! It makes it absolutely perfect and wonderful!” because it doesn’t. I have really temperamental skin so days like today when I didn’t wear makeup because I had an exam, my skin is so oily I look like a greased pig, but tonight I’ll do a face mask to try and help that. I think this is a really give and take process, but I genuinely believe that older me will thank me for letting my skin breath now.
